To mark the start of Earth Month, the Park Ridge Library is launching a new green initiative in which patrons can participate. The Library has teamed up with Clean Up – Give Back, a Des Plaines-based organization that runs a large-scale collection drive for pliable plastic like grocery bags, bubble wrap and bread bags, with the goal of keeping this material out of landfills.
“The Library is always looking for ways to help our community reduce waste and make a positive impact,” said Library Director Joanna Bertucci. “Collecting pliable bags for recycling is a simple step that helps keep them out of landfills—and it’s something everyone can take part in. We’re excited to serve as a community hub for drop-offs and to support sustainability efforts right here in Park Ridge.”
Last year, Clean Up – Give Back collected over 21,000 pounds of plastic with the help of local groups, including libraries, churches, and schools. Groups that collect 1,000 pounds or more within a year earn a bench made from recycled materials, provided through the Trex program. These benches have already been placed in community spaces like the Palatine and Oak Park Libraries as a symbol of sustainability and community collaboration.
We invite the community to help us reach our goal of collecting 1,000-pounds of plastic items by the end of the year to earn a bench for the Library. The collection box is located right inside our front door for anyone wanting to drop off plastic grocery bags and other materials.
