New book discussion series takes flight

Reader Services Librarians Grace W. and Rachel are bringing a new book discussion category to the Spring program lineup: Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Rachel credits her colleague with the idea:

“Grace brought it up and I am so glad she did!” Rachel said. “I’ve loved both genres since I was a kid, and I think there are many out there that do, too. It will be a great book group for avid science fiction and fantasy fans as well as for anyone wanting to expand their reading options.”

According to Publisher’s Weekly, adult fantasy sales skyrocketed 85.2 percent over the first six months of 2023 thanks to a huge increase in interest in romantasy
(the combining of Romance and Fantasy genres). Combined with increases of about 20 percent each in the science fiction and suspense/thriller areas, unit sales of adult fiction rose 6.3 percent in the first half of 2024.

“I love that sci-fi and fantasy are getting more and more buzz—thank you, romantasy—which is great because it’s not just about aliens or space battles,” said Grace. “I think there is something for everyone and it’s showing!”

Three discussion sessions are scheduled for the Spring. Click on the date to register:Graphic promoting spring science fiction & fantasy book discussions
